One of my hens already has sterile egg yok peritonitis, and another may have it too. She stopped laying before she went into a moult around Oct/Nov but hasn't laid since. I was just wondering how long other people's hens have stopped laying for. Pattie and Maureen (non EYP) have basically laid all through the winter, and all hens were laying throughout last winter, so I don't have any reference as to when I can expect Cynthia to start laying soon or not.

Hi Oola

My girls have laid all through the winter (a few more days off during the darker days). They are getting back to an egg each every day. They are young hybrids so I assume they are bred to lay during the winter too. My old girls - pure breed Cochins stopped laying during the winter. My neighbours Cochins are the same - no eggs in Nov, Dec or Jan. I think it's to do with day length. Your ex-battery birds will be bred so they aren't affected by low light levels.

Whatever - it's a privilege to have beautiful freshly laid eggs.

My hens have laid all through the winter this year. Usually they have a break of a couple of weeks at the beginning of the year, but this year has been an exception. Climate change ? I've been giving away a lot as we can't keep pace with the production!

I've got 2 year old Black Rocks and they have laid pretty much continuously. They are really getting into their stride now, though! Yummy!

Hmmm... doesn't look good news for Cynthia then :( She's probably either got an internal abscess or EYP :( Going back to vets with her soon...they might do an exploratory surgery to investigate why her abdomen is so swollen.

It's such a shame you are having problems with Cynthia, hope it all works out.
